 | Marjorie L. Jackson was born in Baltimore, Maryland, where she was surrounded by art and artists throughout her formative years. Her father, Walter, was an amateur photographer of note in the Baltimore area. Her brother David is a gifted artist and interior designer. Her earliest recollections are of drawing, painting, music, and sewing. Margie married Jon Jackson, two years after graduation from high school. Their first six years together were spent in the Navy during the Vietnam years. Margie began to paint in earnest. Hungry for professional training, she graduated from Famous Artists School by distance learning as they moved from one duty station to the next. When they left the Navy in 1971, she enrolled in college and completed more art courses. In the early '70s she did her first showings in the Ellicott City Art Festival and the Hagerstown Festival of Fine Arts. In 1973 God's call changed her life and the life of her husband forever. Margie's art changed as well; it took on a new spiritual dimension that remains a defining mark of her work to this day.
The Jackson's resided in the Catonsville-Ellicott City area of Maryland for 25 years. Their lives and the lives of their three children were interwoven with their church, their business, and their faith. Margie made art, took courses when she could, and raised her three children to appreciate the arts. Her oldest son, Sean, showed promise as an illustrator from childhood, and graduated in 1988 from Carnegie-Melon College of Fine Arts. Today Sean is Art Director of ABC World News Tonight in New York City. Middle son, David, is a Senior Software Engineer who continues to do artwork for relaxation and entertainment. Daughter Heather graduated St. Mary's College with degrees in English and Dramatic Arts. Heather is Assistant Editor of HOME & DESIGN Magazine and works in local theater as a costume designer; her fascination is period costuming. In the '80s, Margie worked with textiles and fabrics creating banners for liturgical dance. By 1995 her banner making became a business, Behold! Banners and Hangings. Her business traveled to several Convocations of the Charismatic Episcopal Church, including the International Convocation in Jacksonville, Florida. Margie has sold numerous banners and altar hangings through Behold, churches. These colorful, spiritually inspired fabric banners and hangings remain a significant portion of her work today. In 1995 Jon began Seminary, and in 1998 he graduated, was ordained to Holy Orders, and came to Petersburg Virginia to pastor St. Andrew's Charismatic Episcopal Church. Later that year he was ordained a priest and became Father Jon. Margie works alongside Father Jon in the ministry of St. Andrew's. These years of serving in the church have taken Margie even deeper into the Divine Other, the Holy Spirit of God, and have inspired paintings into the mystery of faith. These recent paintings are insightful expressions into this woman of faith. Throughout more than 40 years of making art, Margie Jackson has sought an art form that was exciting to her. She sought an expression that brought her joy and fulfillment; something that was just plain fun. In 2005 she discovered polymer clay as a medium for handcrafting jewelry. Jewelry making has become her passion. She spends hours in her studio developing techniques, learning new skills, and creating exciting artwork. She blends her years of creative experience with a colorful medium and quality findings to create hundreds of individually handcrafted pieces, which have become | |
